On Friday, April 19th, our 8th backgammon proficiency test was presented by Michihito “Michy” Kageyama (Giants #2 2017-2018) on the second day of Nordic Open 2019, Denmark.

Here in Nordic Open, the first to the fifth proficiency tests were conducted before this. It’s the first time in three years. Making it a total of six times.

Sixteen players, many of them are Danish and Swede, took time to challenge it. As the result, Thomas Tenland (Sweden) is on top with 42 correct answers (out of 50), followed by Peter Friberg (Denmark).

So, this is the final round of our 8th proficiency test. Each round was attended by players all over the world, and the total number of participants reached 133. We are deeply grateful to all of them for joining us.

Based on both the number of correct answers and the total error rate (equity loss), Matt Cohn-Geier (USA) is ranked first. Thomas Tenland (Sweden) ranks second by a narrow margin. You can see the final result of the 8th proficiency test here.

“Backgammon Proficiency Test” also known as “BGTV Proficiency Contest” (in Istanbul Open) was held on Saturday, January 12th, the second day of the Istanbul Open 2019. Here we held a proficiency test for seven years consecutively since 2013.

Thankfully, Arda Fındıkoğlu, who is the host of the Istanbul Open and the president of WBF Turkey, arranged a special room for testees. All of his staff and Cüneyt Argun Genç helped us a lot during and before the test. We can’t thank them enough.

Eleven participants with various levels from various countries challenged it this year.

The result says that Cumhur Bektüre (Turkey) answered 33 problems correctly (out of 50) and was ranked first among them. Felix Ziva (Israel) got second place at the contest, and Igor Romashov (Russia) was ranked third.

And, what great news!!
Cumhur Bektüre won the main championship of the Istanbul Open 2019!

10月6〜8日の三連休に開催された JBL バックギャモン王位戦 の初日に、第8回バックギャモン検定を実施しました。今年5月の バックギャモンフェスティバル で問題をリニューアルした後は、シカゴオープン（5月）、世界選手権（8月）、U25合宿（8月）と開催を重ね、これが5回目（第5ラウンド）の実施となります。

今回の会場は、大田区池上会館 でした。初日の最初のイベントということもあってか、中上級検定と初中級検定を合わせて参加者は6名にとどまりました。

なお、中上級検定の参加者はこれで102名となり、これまで全ての回で100名オーバーを達成しています。これもひとえに参加された皆さまのおかげです。ありがとうございます。

今回トップの成績を収めた中村慶行プロは、Giants of Backgammon にもランクインするほど世界でも名が知られている人気プレイヤーで、四谷例会やインターネット界隈でバックギャモンの普及活動に携わるなど幅広い活動をおこなっています。中村プロが指導したプレイヤーは、今回の王位戦でも中級戦優勝、チャンピオンシップベスト4ならびにコンソレ優勝といった好成績を収めており、今後も活躍が期待されます。

なお、中村プロの41点という得点は現時点で全体2位タイ（日本人ではトップ）という抜群の成績となっています。中村プロからは、「解説を読みましたが、コンセプトもしっかりしているしわかりやすい。教材としてとても優秀です。自分の力試しには興味なくて受けてなかったのですが、これだけ優秀な教材が手に入ると思ったら、毎年受ける事を強くお勧めします。」と受検した感想をいただいています。

今年のバックギャモン検定41問正解でした。解説を読みましたが、コンセプトもしっかりしているしわかりやすい。教材としてとても優秀です。自分の力試しには興味なくて受けてなかったのですが、これだけ優秀な教材が手に入ると思ったら、毎年受ける事を強くお勧めします。これは宣伝ではありませんｗ

また中村プロは初中級検定の問題制作にも携わっており、初中級検定が終わった後に受検者に向けて解説会を開いていただけました。

ちなみに初中級検定も是非受講してください基礎的な問題を用意してますが、以外とOPクラスプレイヤーでも間違える問題もあります。中級クラスの方でもパーフェクトは取りづらいようです。意外と基礎は疎かにしてしまいがちなので、確認の意味でもよいかも。私が直接解説するイベントもあるので是非。

ということで、8月15日から19日までの5日間、昨年に引き続き足利にて夏休み恒例のバックギャモン合宿（U25合宿）が行われ、合宿2日目の16日にスキル強化メニューの一環として「第8回バックギャモン検定」が希望者に課せられました。バックギャモン検定はU25合宿で毎年教材として活用されており、これで5年連続となります。

検定の実施後に、問題制作者でもある望月正行・景山充人両プロから直々にフィードバックがおこなわれるなど、濃密な学習プログラムが実施されました。

結果はなんと、若干15歳の名城さんが39点を獲得！
39点というスコアは、現時点で日本人トップ、そして全体でも Falafel や Matt Cohn-Geier、世界選手権3回優勝の Jorgen Granstedt などの超有名なトッププレイヤーが数多くいる中での堂々の5位タイ（全98人中）となっており、これはもう快挙です。名城さんは昨年も U25合宿で検定を受検し、33点とこちらも素晴らしいスコア（全体で151人中15位タイ）を修めていました。バックギャモン界の将来を担うニュースターの到来が予感されますね。

そしてこれは日本のバックギャモン界だけでなく、世界中のバックギャモンプレイヤーにも衝撃を与えるセンセーショナルなニュースになったのではないでしょうか。

Masayuki “Mochy” Mochizuki (Giants #1) and Michihito “Michy” Kageyama (Giants #2) presented our 8th “Backgammon Proficiency Test” on Thursday, August 2nd – the third day of the 43rd Backgammon World Championship, Monte Carlo, Monaco.

That was the fifth time our proficiency test was held there, and so it has become a popular event among regular players.

A total of 31 players, including Jorgen Granstedt (Sweden, the three-time World Champion), Marc Olsen (Denmark, #1 in the 7th test), Falafel (USA/Israel, #1 in the 6th test), Zdenek Zizka (Czech, #1 in the 5th test), Matt Cohn-Geier (USA, #1 in the 3rd test), were present at the test.

As a result, Matt Cohn-Geier got an extremely high score of 43/50, and the runners‐up are Jorgen Granstedt and an anonymous player with 40/50. Matt currently stands in first place in terms of both the number of right answers and the total error rate (equity loss) among all of the players.

On Sunday, May 27th, the fourth day of the 38th Chicago Open Backgammon Tournament, Giants #1 Masayuki “Mochy” Mochizuki and Giants #2 Michihito “Michy” Kageyama presented the newest version of our “Backgammon Proficiency Test”. They also offered a comprehensive review to its participants on the following day.

Our proficiency test has attracted more and more attention from players all over the world since its establishment in May 2011. We are proud to announce that the total number of the participants has just reached 1000. Thank you everyone!

The number of participants of this year was 40, the highest number ever, and the questionnaire said that there were 24 players with over 10 years’ experience. It has become a kind of popular event there.

As the result, an anonymous player is on top with 41 correct answers (out of 50), followed by Frank Talbot and Gerry Tansey. Provisionally, (Anonymous) is now ranked first overall. You can see the list of overall results as of now here.

GW期間中（5月3日〜5日）に行われた「バックギャモンフェスティバル 2018」の初日に、「バックギャモン検定」の新シーズンが幕を下ろしました。

昨年の反省を生かし少し大きめの会場での開催となりましたが、開始時刻の 11:30 までに席が全て埋まり満員御礼でのスタートとなりました。

なお今回は、中上級者向けの「第8回 バックギャモン検定」のほかにも、初中級者向けの「第6回 バックギャモン初中級検定」も同時開催しました。
中上級検定の受検者は22名、初中級検定の受検者は4名でした。

全体的にハイスコアな結果となり、前回の平均を2点以上上回っていますが、今年の問題が昨年度より易化したかどうかは参加者のレベルにも依存するため判断することができません。

そんな中、現時点の暫定トップは高田さん、上田さんの二名で37点（50点満点中）となっています。お二方とも PR5 を切るほどの実力者とのことで期待通りといったところかもしれませんが、特に高田さんは 前回の検定 では日本人トップとなる全体8位の成績を修めているため、このスコアは全体でもかなりハイレベルなものになると推測されます。

今年も常連の方（8回の検定すべてで1回目に参加しているという方も！）はもちろん、初参加の方も何人もいらっしゃいました。「今年もいい問題だった」と声を掛けられると、（実際に問題制作を担当しているのは望月プロ・景山プロ・横田さんですが）制作に携わった私としても嬉しくなってしまいます。
一方で、事前の会場への誘導やアナウンス、事後の成績証の配布時間や公表方法についてのアナウンスが不足しているとのご指摘も受けました。こちらは今後の運営に必ず活かしていきたいと思います。

そして例年同じことを言いますが、バックギャモン検定はスコアの良し悪しだけがキモなのではありません。問題集として世界最高のクオリティであることのほか、「出題の妙」と「世界トッププロの解説」がバックギャモン検定の「売り」と言っても過言ではありません。今回参加されなかった方も、チャンスがあれば是非受検してみてください。

バックギャモン検定は今年で8年目のシーズンを迎えました。第7回までの累計受検者数は 952名となっているため、今シーズンで参加者一千人の大台を突破することはほぼ確実です。これもひとえにバックギャモン検定を支持してくださる皆さまのお陰です。皆さまのニーズがなければ、毎年5月の開催が実現しませんので。

The 7th round of our 7th “Backgammon Proficiency Test” was held as “BGTV Proficiency Contest” on Saturday, January 13th, the middle day of the Istanbul Open 2018.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t join it, but the test was supervised by our Turkish friends, Arda Fındıkoğlu (the host of the Istanbul Open and the president of WBF Turkey) and Cüneyt Argun Genç. They carried that out smoothly and all went well. They always cooperate with us, so we are really grateful to them.

Well, that was the sixth consecutive time our test was carried out there.
This year, 19 participants with various levels from various countries challenged it.

The result says that Jalil Khalili (Iran) answered 30 problems correctly (out of 50) and was ranked first among them, although he was ranked second last year. Claus Elken (Denmark) got second place at the contest, and then he got second place at the main championship. Martin Barkwill (UK) was ranked third, although he got the highest last year. Onur Vurur got the top score among the Turks this year.

Gammon Associates held the 2017 California State Championship at the Hilton hotel during December 1-3, 2017. On the second day of the event, Masayuki “Mochy” Mochizuki (Giants #1 2015-2016) presented our 7th “Backgammon Proficiency Test”.

This was the first time our test was held in California, and we are grateful to have been given this opportunity.

There were 23 entries for the test. While it might be the first time for many of the participants to take it, Bob Wachtel, who is also Giants #12, got the top score with 39 points (out of 50).
